Roanoke's Virginian Railway Passenger Station is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. In the 2003 nomination submitted to the US Department of Interior, National Park Service, the nomination states that "The railroad industry was largely responsible for the foundation and growth of the City of Roanoke beginning in the 1880s and continuing through the 1940s. The period of significance for the Virginian Passenger Station began at the date of its construction in 1909, extending to the period when its use for railroad passenger service was discontinued in the mid-1950s.

Roanoke's famous star, known as the "Roanoke Star" or the "Mill Mountain Star" is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. In the 1999 nomination submitted to the US Department of Interior, National Park Service, the nomination reports that "The Roanoke Star is reportedly the largest man-made, illuminated star in the world."
